January 3, 1974 marks the beginning of Calicut University Staff Organisation (CUSO), under the guidance of Sri. T C Bhaskaran, as there was a need for an alternative union to protect the interests of the employees. CUSO aims to secure the genuine demands of the employees through acceptable forms of struggle and the political leanings of the individuals will not be allowed to sway the Organisation’s policies and stances. The first general body meeting of the Organisation was convened on 24th Jan 1974.

Organisation's sub organs like Artesia, Vanitha Welfare Society, Co-operative Credit Society performs commentable service to the employees as well as the public.

The University

University of Calicut was established in 1968. situated in a panoramic plateau, in sylvan surroundings, on either side of the N.H.17, about 24kms south of Kozhikode city, Kerala, India. The campus has an ideal natural environment for education. The University main campus is at Thenjipalam, near to Kozhikkode.The University has three Centers, Thrissur, Kozhikkode and at Vadakara. University of Calicut is a premier institution for studies and research in the sciences, the humanities and the arts.

The University aims at developing technical and technological education, conducting research and training in the social sciences and languages, and promoting the arts and culture specific to Kerala with 31 post graduate departments and 304 colleges affiliated to the University. Of these, 83 are located in Kozhikode district, 72 in Thrissur, 82 in Malappuram, 50 in Palakkad and 10 in Wayanad district includes Post Graduate Colleges, First Grade Colleges, Law Colleges, Teachers Training, Engineering Colleges, Medical Colleges, Ayurveda Colleges etc.
